How to Clean and Care for Your Sneakers
By Daily Laces June 28, 2026
A good pair of shoes can last for years with a little care. Here's how to keep your sneakers looking fresh — without ruining them.
Everyday habits
- Rotate between two pairs so each gets time to air out and bounce back.
- Loosen the laces before you slip them on and off — it saves the heel and the laces.
- Store them away from direct sun and heat, which can yellow and crack materials.
Cleaning by material
Canvas & knit
Mix warm water with a little mild soap. Use a soft brush in small circles, then wipe with a damp cloth. Air dry — never the dryer.
Leather
Wipe with a damp cloth, then use a dedicated leather cleaner for scuffs. Condition occasionally to prevent cracking, and buff dry.
Suede & nubuck
Keep water away. Use a suede brush to lift dirt and a suede eraser for marks. A protective spray applied before first wear pays off.
Whatever you do, skip these
- The washing machine — it warps soles and breaks down glue.
- The dryer or a radiator — high heat shrinks and cracks.
- Bleach — even on white shoes, it yellows over time.
Drying the right way
Stuff damp shoes with paper towel to hold their shape and soak up moisture, then air dry at room temperature. Swap the paper once it's wet.
